A 1.2 Ma record of glaciation and fluvial discharge from the West European Atlantic margin ArchiMer
Toucanne, Samuel; Zaragosi, S.; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Gibbard, P. L.; Eynaud, F.; Giraudeau, J.; Turon, J. L.; Cremer, M.; Cortijo, E.; Martinez, P.; Rossignol, L..
The correlation of continental sedimentary records with the marine isotope stratigraphy is a challenge of central importance in Quaternary stratigraphy, particularly in Western Europe where long records of glaciation on land areas are particularly rare. Here we demonstrate for the first time the interrelationship of events during the last 1.2 Ma in an ocean-sediment core from the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic), SW of the Channel. The identification of discharge variations from tributary river systems to the 'Fleuve Manche' palaeoriver during glacio-eustatic sea-level lowstands demonstrates the correlation of the marine sediment stratigraphy to the expansion and recession of the European ice-sheets. The amplitude and chronology of European ice-sheet...

A dynamic explanation for the origin of the western Mediterranean organic-rich layers ArchiMer
Rogerson, M.; Cacho, I.; Jimenez-espejo, F.; Reguera, M. I.; Sierro, F. J.; Martinez-ruiz, F.; Frigola, J.; Canals, M..
The eastern Mediterranean sapropels are among the most intensively investigated phenomena in the paleoceanographic record, but relatively little has been written regarding the origin of the equivalent of the sapropels in the western Mediterranean, the organic-rich layers (ORLs). ORLs are recognized as sediment layers containing enhanced total organic carbon that extend throughout the deep basins of the western Mediterranean and are associated with enhanced total barium concentration and a reduced diversity (dysoxic but not anoxic) benthic foraminiferal assemblage. Consequently, it has been suggested that ORLs represent periods of enhanced productivity coupled with reduced deep ventilation, presumably related to increased continental runoff, in close...

In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions of scientists, engineers and managers involved in the worldwide altimetry community to depict the state of altimetry and propose recommendations for the altimetry of the future. This paper summarizes contributions and recommendations that were collected and...

The Palomares Margin, an NNE–SSW segment of the South Iberian Margin located between the Alboran and the Algerian–Balearic basins, is dissected by two major submarine canyon systems: the Gata (in the South) and the Alías–Almanzora (in the North). New swath bathymetry, side-scan sonar images, accompanied by 5 kHz and TOPAS subbottom profiles, allow us to recognize these canyons as Mediterranean examples of medium-sized turbidite systems developed in a tectonically active margin. The Gata Turbidite System is confined between residual basement seamounts and exhibits incised braided channels that feed a discrete deep-sea fan, which points to a dominantly coarse-grained turbiditic system. The Alías–Almanzora Turbidite System, larger and less confined, is a...

Caracterización del régimen de mareas y corrientes a lo largo del canal Moraleda (43° 54' S - 45° 17' S) OceanDocs
Fierro, J.; Bravo, M.; Castillo, M..
Sea level and currents in “Boca del Guafo” and Moraleda channel are studied using statististical and Fourier (harmonic) analyses. The data were collected using oceanographic instruments that covered a wide geographical area, from the northern most point of Moraleda channel to Darwin channel. The results of the harmonic analysis indicated that the area has a semidiurnal tide with a 12-minute phase shift between the ports of Melinka and Lagunas. This result shows that the tidal wave does not only propagate along the Moraleda channel, but at the same time enters the region through several transversal channels that connect the Pacific Ocean with the Moraleda channel. Along the main channel (Moraleda) no reverse current was recorded, which is an unusual...

Characteristics of the convergence zone at the eastern edge of the Pacific warm pool ArchiMer
Maes, Christophe; Picaut, Joël; Kuroda, Yoshifumi; Ando, Kentaro.
The characteristics of the convergence zone at the eastern edge of the equatorial Pacific warm pool are studied using a compilation of in-situ current and salinity measurements during the period 1992-2001. The displacement of the convergence zone is observed, for the first time, as far west as 140degreesE in the far western Pacific, mainly during La Nina periods, and near 140degreesW in the central Pacific during the 1997-98 El Nino. The convergence zone may be associated with a salinity front dividing the fresh waters of the warm pool from the salty waters upwelled in the central equatorial Pacific. Despite a zonal displacement ranging over about one fifth of the equatorial circumference of the earth, the characteristics of the main parameters involved in...

Coral Reef and High Sea Level at Luhuitou, Hainan Island during the Holocene. OceanDocs
Huang, Deyin; Shi, Qi; Zhang, Yechun.
According to the field survey and 14C dating at Luhuitou, southern Hainan Island, a subsiding area, the authors conclude the high sea level history recorded by coral reef in the Holocene. At least 4 sea level high-stands can be identified from the distribution of coral reef ages: 7300 - 6000 cal.aBP, 4800 - 4700 cal.aBP, 4300 - 4200 cal.aBP and 3100 - 2900 cal.aBP. The highest sea level occurred around 7300 - 6700 cal.aBP, and biological-morphological zones took their shape during the stage. The later coral reefs developed in ponds, depressions, and developed outwards on both sides of Luhuitou peninsula. The modern coral reefs are developing in out reef flat and reef-front slope. Moreover, the time of high sea levels in the northern South China Sea...

Effect of river runoff on sea level from in-situ measurements and numerical models in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Laiz, Irene; Ferrer, Luis; Plomaritis, Theocharis A.; Charria, Guillaume.
Daily time series of in-situ tide gauge records and river runoff data were analysed to investigate the contribution of river discharge storm events to sea level in the Bay of Biscay. Three main river systems were considered for this study, representing cases of small (Nervión, 1900 km2), medium (Adour, 16880 km2) and large (Gironde, 84811 km2) watershed basins. Typical storms correspond to water discharge rates of 150, 700, and 1100 m3 s−1 from the Nervión, Adour, and Gironde rivers, respectively. The effect of these events on daily mean sea level was evaluated using two different approaches: (1) through the analysis of time series of tide gauges placed within the river mouths; and (2) through numerical simulations using the ROMS model (Regional Ocean...

Evidence for a differential sea level rise between hemispheres over the twentieth century ArchiMer
Woeppelmann, Guy; Marcos, Marta; Santamaria-gomez, Alvaro; Martin-miguez, Belen; Bouin, Marie-noelle; Gravelle, Mederic.
Tide gauge records are the primary source of sea level information over multidecadal to century timescales. A critical issue in using this type of data to determine global climate-related contributions to sea level change concerns the vertical motion of the land upon which the gauges are grounded. Here we use observations from the Global Positioning System for the correction of this vertical land motion. As a result, the spatial coherence in the rates of sea level change during the twentieth century is highlighted at the local and the regional scales, ultimately revealing a clearly distinct behavior between the Northern and the Southern Hemispheres with values of 2.0mm/yr and 1.1mm/yr, respectively. Our findings challenge the widely accepted value of...

Facteurs de contrôle sur le fonctionnement du système turbiditique du Rhône depuis le Dernier Maximum Glaciaire ArchiMer
Lombo Tombo, Swesslath.
Turbidite systems are accumulations of fluvial sediment on the continental margins. They are mainly made of « turbidites » deposited after the flow of turbidity currents inside submarine canyons and channels. Their structure and composition are controlled by global and regional environmental changes such as sea level and climate. The two fundamental parameters that govern their functioning are the production of sediment in the river watersheds and the capability and reactivity of the transfer to the turbidite system. In this work we show that for the last 24,000 years the functioning of the Rhone turbidite system has shown rapid changes under the control of sea level and sediment production fluctuations. Our results are based on a millennial time-scale...

Geomorphology of the Kenyan Coast: Not as a Result of Sea-Level Change Alone OceanDocs
Abuodha, P.A.W..
The coastal setting and the geology control the geomorphology on the Kenyan coast. The evolution of the physical environment has also been influenced by climate, wave and tidal regime, sedimentation and river discharge. The shore terraces of Kenyan coast correspond to eustatic movements of sea level. There seems to be evidence of a high water level during the late Pleistocene. For the lower terraces a Holocene age is suggested. During the Pleistocene, sea level fluctuations associated with glacial / interglacial phases left well developed raised platforms and beaches. The Kenyan coast has a strong tectonic influence and it is difficult to describe the coast in terms of emergence or submergence only. It can therefore be concluded that the geomorphology of...

Impact of multiple altimeter data and mean dynamic topography in a global analysis and forecasting system ArchiMer
Hamon, Mathieu; Greiner, Eric; Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Remy, Elisabeth.
Satellite altimetry is one of the main sources of information used to constrain global ocean analysis and forecasting systems. In addition to in situ vertical temperature and salinity profiles, and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data, Sea Level Anomalies (SLA) from multiple altimeters are assimilated through the knowledge of a surface reference, the Mean Dynamic Topography (MDT). The quality of analyses and forecasts mainly depends on the availability of SLA observations and on the accuracy of the MDT. A series of Observing System Evaluations (OSEs) were conducted to assess the relative importance of the number of assimilated altimeters and the accuracy of the MDT in a Mercator Ocean global ¼° ocean data assimilation system. Dedicated tools were used to...

Impact of relative sea level and rapid climate changes on the architecture and lithofacies of the Holocene Rhone subaqueous delta (Western Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Fanget, Anne-sophie; Berne, Serge; Jouet, Gwenael; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Dennielou, Bernard; Maillet, Gregoire M.; Tondut, Mathieu.
The modern Rhone delta in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) is a typical wave-dominated delta that developed after the stabilization of relative sea level following the last deglacial sea-level rise. Similar to most other deltas worldwide, it displays several stacked parasequences and lobes that reflect the complex interaction between accommodation, sediment supply and autogenic processes on the architecture of a wave-dominated delta. The interpretation of a large set of newly acquired very high-resolution seismic and sedimentological data, well constrained by 14C dates, provides a refined three-dimensional image of the detailed architecture (seismic bounding surfaces, sedimentary facies) of the Rhone subaqueous delta, and allows us to propose a...

Macro- and micro-faunas are reported from six gravity cores collected at a mean depth of 150 m in the surficial deposits of the Kaiser sand bank in the Southern Western Channel Approaches. These are bivalves (mainly), gastropods, echinids, crustaceans and foraminifers. These fauna present a very rich association of numerous, well preserved species from various ecological settings. Such an association is commonly reported from the continental shelf of the last transgressive cycle. In addition, the sediment comprises two imported faunal associations. The first one corresponds to thanatocaenoses of Pliocene/lowermost Pleistocene and Weichselian age, reworked respectively from the underlying celtic incised valley fills and the Celtic Sand Banks.
